Transmission Service

Transmission work is where the gap between a shop that diagnoses and a shop that replaces costs you the most money. A lot of what gets called a failed transmission is a solenoid, a sensor, a wiring fault or low fluid. We find out which before anyone starts quoting a rebuild - and if it genuinely is the transmission, we will tell you plainly whether the car is worth it.

What you might be noticing

  • Shifts that flare, slip, or land harder than they used to
  • A delay of a second or more between selecting drive and the car moving
  • Shuddering at a steady cruise, often around torque-converter lockup speed
  • Whining or humming that changes with road speed rather than engine speed
  • The transmission warning light, or the car dropping into limp mode
  • Red or brown fluid on the driveway

How we do the job

  1. 01

    Read the codes first

Modern transmissions log a lot about their own behavior - shift timing, solenoid commands, slip ratios. Pulling that data costs a fraction of a teardown and frequently points at something small and cheap.

  2. 02

Check fluid level, condition and colour

Fluid that is dark and smells burnt has been overheated, and that tells us something. Fluid that is simply low points at a leak, which is a very different repair from a failing gearbox.

  3. 03

    Drive it

A lot of shift complaints only appear warm, or under load, or on a grade. We drive the car the way you described it rather than diagnosing from the parking lot.

  4. 04

Service, or tell you it needs more

If it is due for fluid and a filter, that is what we do. If we find something that a service will not fix, you get told that before you pay for a service that was never going to help.

  5. 05

    Be straight about the economics

On an older, higher-mileage car, a full rebuild sometimes costs more than the vehicle is worth. That is your decision to make, not ours to make for you - but you will get an honest number to make it with.

What it costs

A fluid and filter service is a routine, predictable job. Diagnosis of a shifting complaint is charged for the time it takes, and we tell you the number up front. Internal repairs and rebuilds vary enormously by vehicle, so we will not pretend to quote one before we know what is actually wrong. Call and describe what the car is doing.

Common questions

Should I flush my transmission at a set mileage?
It depends on the vehicle and how it has been driven - towing and mountain grades are much harder on fluid than flat commuting. Some manufacturers specify a service interval and some call the fluid lifetime-fill. We will look at your fluid and your service history rather than applying one interval to every car.
Is it true a flush can damage a high-mileage transmission?
It is a real concern that gets overstated. The risk is on a transmission that is already worn and has never been serviced. That is exactly why we check the fluid's condition and talk to you about the car's history before doing anything.
Does towing or mountain driving change things?
Yes. Heat is what kills automatic transmissions, and pulling a load up a long grade generates a lot of it. If you tow, or you regularly drive the passes, more frequent fluid service is genuinely worth it rather than an upsell.
Do you rebuild transmissions in-house?
We diagnose transmission problems, do fluid and filter service, and handle external repairs like solenoids, sensors, linkages and leaks. For a full internal rebuild, call and we will tell you honestly what we can do in-house and what we would send out - so you are not paying us to learn on your car.
